Nevada's wildfire season is coming. Should NV Energy customers help utility fund insurance?

With wildfire season coming, NV Energy not only wants to 1) charge ratepayers more to cover its insurance 2) hold all the cards (and money) in the event of a wildfire and 3) not be legally liable for wildfire damages. Seems great!

Voters are fired up over data centers. Do Nevada candidates care?

"Although data centers create a significant number of temporary construction jobs, they do not provide many long-term jobs. The more than $450 million in state tax breaks have come alongside the promise of about 400 permanent jobs.

Local governments have missed out on more than $537 million in sales and use tax revenues because of the incentives, a Nevada Independent analysis found. But supporters of the tax breaks have said companies would not choose Nevada without them, giving the state no revenue from the industry."

'It's like we don't exist': Nearly 50,000 Lake Tahoe residents face power loss as utility redirects lines to data centers

"Data centers used 22% of Nevada’s electricity in 2024, and that share could rise to 35% by 2030. In NV Energy’s own 2024 resource plan, about 75% of major-project load growth is attributed to data centers, according to Sierra Club expert testimony filed with Nevada regulators and reviewed by Fortune, and most of it is concentrated in Northern Nevada—using the same system that feeds power to Lake Tahoe."

NV Energy’s new long-term plan highlights massive power demand tied to data centers

"Energy researchers and lawmakers have warned that large-scale data center growth could strain existing infrastructure and dramatically increase electricity demand in northern Nevada. Earlier analyses tied to NV Energy planning documents estimated proposed data center projects alone could eventually require nearly three times northern Nevada’s current peak electricity use."

NV Energy is going to sacrifice all of our access to electricity on the altar of corporate greed.
