Carpet or no? WWYD

We did a big renovation 13 yrs ago in our 3-level plus basement 1920s row house. We addressed almost every other area in the house but at the time couldn’t afford to redo the old narrow-slat hardwood floors on the 2nd floor. Plus we were told they were too old and thin to refinish anyway.

Now they are in terrible shape and splintering, holes in places etc. we mainly deal with it with floor rugs but I’m considering wall to wall or possibly cut-to-fit carpets with edge binding. Replacing the wood seems like such a pain and would be incredibly inconvenient though I guess getting carpet installed will be too.

Rooms are two small-ish teen bedrooms and my office, and the hallway connecting them. We have a carpet runner on the stairs going up and down and wall to wall in the basement. Oak floors in the rest of the house, typical for this city.

I feel stuck! How would you decide?
