I’m driving next week from Gatwick to Sunderland, and shortly after, the return journey. Probably in a manual, and certainly on the “wrong” side of the road! Can anyone recommend for each journey somewhere interesting to stop where we can visit maybe a nice church or at least have a mini day out, not just a service station stop. In each direction ideally over the half way point. But without too much of a detour and no terrifying city centre complexities. It seems to be about 5 1/2 hour journey, so somewhere to stop after about 3 hours would be optimal. Thanks!
