Why are “popular” scents looked down upon by some in fragrance circles?

Im researching into colognes a lot especially through Claude or Youtube reviews. There seems to be a theme to go for complexity and an aversion to “crowd pleaser” perfumes because they are too simple.

I just wonder what’s wrong with getting a perfume that’s popular if you happen to like it? I did a lot of testing and seemed to like the mass appeal scents more than the niche ones like tobacco and maybe thats because my tastes are still developing and immature but is there something inherently wrong with “crowd pleasers” like Sauvage, Oud Wood, Bleu De Chanel etc

I notice on frag subs people are recommending niche brands ive never heard of and wonder if thats what I’m meant to go for or an indication of people with more specialised/refined tastes that care about more than just “smelling good”.
