I am a NEET-UG aspirant writing to bring to your attention a critical policy concern that affects hundreds of thousands of students across the country every year.

NEET-UG currently serves as the sole gateway to medical education in India. Unlike engineering aspirants, who have access to multiple national and state-level entrance examinations — including JEE Main (conducted twice annually), BITSAT, state CETs, and VITEEE — as well as a wide range of affordable private institutions, medical aspirants have no comparable alternatives. MBBS through a government or reputed private medical college remains the only viable pathway, and NEET-UG is the only examination that leads to it.

Given this reality, a single unfavourable performance on one day — due to illness, a personal emergency, examination anxiety, or circumstances entirely beyond a student's control — can permanently derail years of dedicated preparation. This is a structural inequity that deserves urgent policy attention.

It is also worth noting that a single examination sitting is an inherently limited measure of a candidate's true potential. The decision to conduct JEE Main twice a year reflects a sound understanding of this limitation. The same principle applies with even greater force to NEET-UG, where the absence of any alternative pathway makes the stakes considerably higher.

I therefore respectfully urge the National Testing Agency to consider the following reforms:

1. Conduct NEET-UG in two sessions per year (for example, in January and May/June), with candidates permitted to use their best score for counselling purposes.

2. Ensure strict syllabus parity and standardization of difficulty across both sessions to preserve the integrity of the examination.

3. Engage with relevant stakeholders — including the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), medical education experts, and student representatives — to design a fair and effective implementation framework.

This reform would meaningfully reduce the psychological burden on lakhs of aspiring medical students and their families, while also improving the accuracy and fairness of the selection process.
