Help me pick a base in the Cotswolds/do we need a car?

Hello! My husband, 7 yo daughter and I will be spending 3 nights in the Cotswolds next month. We were planning on taking a train from London then bussing it/taxi/uber. I am looking at air bnbs all over, trying to find something convenient, but with that quintessential Cotswolds feel. I think I’ve narrowed it down to Cirencester or Stow on the Wold as we have found cute places in both and they seem pretty walkable.

We are open to renting a car if even just for a day. Is that easy to do in those towns? Will we miss out on too much without a car?

The things that are important to me are:

  1. country walks. I’d really like to walk in between villages exploring. Even better, I’d love to tap into the Cotswold Way, but I am content with any beautiful English countryside walks.

  2. good food/pubs nearby (walking distance preferred)

  3. not a complicated journey to/from London

  4. stuff a 7 year old might be interested in.

  5. sites with historical interest, Henry VIII. (Doesn’t have to be in the town we are staying in)

We are open to renting a car in London or when we get to the Cotswolds, if it’s something we will need on a daily basis, but hoping to avoid if possible.
