Advice for getting into SMD soldering.

So I've got about half a dozen through hole kits built and want to build some 1U modules that have primarily SMD components. Besides getting some test kits to practice on, what soldering gear would you recommend I invest in? Do I need a a heat gun and a hot-plate?

Metropolix on the leads, as well as Multigrain, while Reliq takes care of the drums and bassline. Manis Iteritas/ vult freak/ Desmodus Versio. Loquelic Iteritas Percido/ C4RBN/ sealegs/ Swells. Cursus Iteritas Percido/ Steve's MS-22. Multigrain into Quasar. Some mixing, EQ and compression done in the rack, with some polishing and limiting done in Bitwig. All FX done out of the box.
