Thrown ball out of play ruling
12U baseball coach here playing NFHS rules this weekend. Had a question about a ruling that happened on three plays. If anyone can give me some insight or specific rule, I would appreciate it. To preface, all three scenarios happen with a runner on first.
Scenario 1) R1 takes lead, pitcher disengages pitcher plate and attempts to pick off R1 and throws the ball out of play. Umpire awards R1 second base. I asked umpire if he should get third as he legally occupied first at the time of the play, and the pitcher disengaging made him a fielder.
Umpire said no the rule is one base from an infielder at the time of the play. He also said because R1 was retreating that he was entitled to 2nd. Had he been advancing on the pickoff attempt he would have been awarded 3rd.
Scenario 2) R1 is stealing on the pitch, the pitch is wild and goes out of play through a dugout opening. Umpire rules that R1 is awarded 3rd because he was attempting to advance to second on the pitch.
Additional question on this posed by fellow coach. If it is touched or deflected off of the catcher or the umpire, does this affect the bases awarded?
Scenario 3) R1 takes lead on the pitch. Batter hits line drive to 3rd base and it is caught. 3rd throws to 1st to double up R1 but throws the ball out of play. R1 legally touches first and is advanced to 2nd on the out of play.
Explanation here from the umpire was that he was retreating to first and it is one base award for a play by an infielder.
Additionally, had an opportunity to speak with the head umpire for my organization and he explained it to me as such.
Once the ball is pitched, and put in play by the hitter, it is no longer a time of pitch question rather a throw timing question. His explanation was that 1 base is awarded for a ball thrown out of play by an infielder and a 2 base award for a throw from an outfielder. He also said that in the case of number three, because of the putout, R1 no longer legally occupied first and was technically awarded first and second after trying to retreat on the line drive out.
Thanks in advance for any help/information.
Edit: I asked about these rulings at the time of the play. Having umpired for 10+ years I felt comfortable in my knowledge and what the awards should have been. I backed down when the umpire threatened to throw me out of the game because I was not the head coach and he didn't want to talk to me.
