Just a Speed Dial: Opera-like simple Speed Dial
Got tired of all the Speed Dial options and sat down to make a simple and sleek extension.
No weather, clock, motivational quote or other bullsh*t - just Speed Dial out of the existing bookmarks!
JaSD – Just a Speed Dial replaces the new tab page with a clean,
fast-loading Speed Dial that’s entirely based on your Chrome bookmarks.
No accounts, no cloud, no subscription, no license fee, no distractions.
Inspired by the old Opera and frustrated by the lack of a simple extension that isn’t completely cluttered or too minimal.
What JaSD can do:
▸ Bookmarks as Speed Dial
All bookmarks from your bookmarks bar appear at a
glance as clickable tiles — with favicon, name, and direct link.
▸ Folders in the header
All bookmark folders are displayed in the header. You can choose which folders appear.
▸ JaSD loads favicons directly from your saved bookmarks, uses Chrome’s internal favicon cache, and
reliably falls back to other sources—always finding the right icon.
▸ Custom favicons, just in case one is missing
By right-clicking → Edit, you can upload a
custom image as a favicon for each bookmark.
▸ Customizable design
· Background: Light or dark – or upload your own background
· Blur and/or darken the background
· Text color: White or Black
· Tile size adjustable from 48 to 240 pixels
· Settings icon can be hidden (right-clicking still opens it)
▸ Import & Export
All settings and custom favicons can be saved as a JSON file
and restored on another device.
▸ Two Languages
German and English – switchable directly in the settings.
Privacy:
JaSD stores data exclusively locally in your browser (chrome.storage).
No data is transferred to external servers; no tracking,
no ads, no account creation required
Permissions:
· Bookmarks – to display your saved bookmarks
· Storage – to save settings and favicons locally
· Access to all URLs – to load favicons from linked pages
I created this extension because I couldn’t find one that fit my needs. The extension is simple and can just set your existing bookmarks as Speed Dials—that’s it!
