Beware of “Christian” scammers DMing people in this subreddit
I’ve noticed a growing number of accounts messaging people after they post/comment here, pretending to be struggling Christians and asking for food, money, PayPal donations, gift cards, etc.
I’ve personally received DMs saying things like:
- “Can you help me buy food?”
- “I’m starving and nobody will help me.”
- “God told me to reach out to you.”
- “I just need a small amount for groceries.”
Some of these accounts use Bible verses, emotional stories, or fake testimonies to pressure people into sending money quickly. A few even copy/paste the same messages to multiple users.
As Christians, we’re called to help people in need, but we’re also called to be wise and discerning. Unfortunately, scammers know compassionate communities are easier to manipulate.
I’m not saying every person asking for help is fake, but please be careful:
- Check account history
- Watch for brand-new accounts
- Be cautious with emotional pressure tactics
- Don’t feel guilty for saying no
- Report suspicious DMs/accounts to Reddit moderators
Real charity should happen with wisdom, accountability, and honesty.
