US, Growing zone 6B.

This gorgeous limelight hydrangea is getting WAY too tall. It’s been neglected for years and hasn’t had a good trim in a long time.

If I cut it down significantly, will it grow back? Anyway to get it back to 6-7 feet tall without completely killing it?

I’d like to trim back all of the branches to just underneath where the old dead branches are still there. But I’m worried I’ll just kill it and have a weirdly tall tree stump for the next year while I hope it grows back.
