This is not a minor issue. FGM/C remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths among girls and young women in practicing regions of Africa. It claims more lives than HIV/AIDS, measles, and meningitis in several countries. Yet despite this reality, only 44 countries have laws explicitly criminalising FGM.
Sweden is not here to call out this issue. It is here to actually bring reform.

After 2008, the Board of Migration stated that FGM could be grounds for asylum as a form of gender-based persecution.
Hence, this shows that Sweden is taking efficient action against such crimes against humanity
Sweden has ratified various international conventions condemning FGM, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and etc.
Therefore, sweden calls for all countries to first acknowledge the weight of the situation, and then actually finding a solution.
