Gwent FINALLY clicked for me and now I love it!
So I'm on the tail end of my second complete playthrough of TW3, (first time was all the way back in 2015). I tried playing Gwent a couple of times over the last few months, but always found myself confused and frustrated (naturally, because I'm playing with no strategy), wondering how the enemy always manages to beat me in the last round (turns out, it's because I'd burn my best cards early), and eventually just gave up on it.
In all of this time I never really bothered to try and figure out how Gwent gameplay actually works ... until now. After reading a few Reddit posts, I came to realize that the starting deck is actually atrocious, and after running around purchasing some better cards from merchants, I put together a better deck with more spy cards, and began to follow a strategy revolving around the weather cards.
Won my first four games today (against Zoltan, Olgierd, the Kaer Trolde blacksmith, and the halflings at the wedding in HoS) and suddenly I can't get enough of it! 😁 Is there anyone else who was late to the Gwent party during their playthrough? Surely I can't be the only one!
