Mississippi Delta, poorest region in the US

In the Mississippi Delta, the average wage typically ranges from $20,000 to $35,000 annually depending on the county, making it the lowest-earning region in the US *excluding territories*. The counties within the Mississippi Delta also rank top in the nation for highest homicide rate per person. These problems are mainly attributed to the regions complex somewhat recent history of segregation and slavery along with remoteness, lack of jobs/economic opportunity.

YouTube - A young mother and her children living in the Delta show interviewer the living conditions in their home. Although this is an old video conditions just like this and worse persist in the region.

To this day, heaps of aluminum cans, glass bottles etc from the 1970s and 80s sit in wooded areas across the United States. Much of this litter remains in worryingly preserved condition.
