Unpopular opinion: Ruto is a necessary evil

Before you attack me, hear me out. I’m not saying he’s perfect, innocent, or beyond criticism. Far from it. But Kenya has historically had leaders who either maintained the status quo quietly or made big promises with little execution.

For the first time in a long while, we have a president who seems obsessed with economic restructuring, infrastructure, digitisation, tax collection, and reducing dependency on debt-fuelled comfort. Painful? Yes. Annoying? Definitely. But maybe some of these harsh policies are the bitter medicine Kenya avoided for too long.

Most Kenyans want lower taxes, lower fuel prices, jobs, subsidies, development, better healthcare, less debt, and a stronger shilling — all at once. Reality doesn’t work like that.

Sometimes I feel like Kenya needed someone willing to be unpopular in order to force difficult conversations about productivity, accountability, and sustainability. The problem is that necessary reforms often look evil in the short term.

I could be wrong. But years from now, I wouldn’t be shocked if history judges Ruto differently from how social media currently does.

What do you guys think? Juu mimi Mau Rironi iishe tu, nko tutam. Macuzo wangu wamdedi kwa iyo barabara. Sidai kua next. Uhuru, Kibaki, Moi, walidedisha way more people nkiwa alive tu.
