The Rise and Fall of the Kingdom of Kongo

Hey y’all, this is my first ever post.

I was confronted with this video and found it really interesting, it’s a rare thing to find videos about the history of non-English speaking african countries or even about Southern Africa as a whole and I might say this video did quite a good job but also gave me some mixed feelings.

At first there’s the misuse of the word Kikongo to refer to the people of Kongo, when in reality it refers to language they speak and people is referred as Bakongo (mukongo in singular). And then there’s some mischaracterition of the kingdoms history such as saying it was a state that never knew peace, referring to it constantly waging war against its neighbours to annex them and get more slaves. The further ahead in the video when referring to the jagas invasion he tells that day attacked as a form of retaliation of the Kongolese constant aggression to them, and i have never heard or read such thing (i am angolan, and from bakongo background).

I am posting this here to here from you all what’s your opinion on this subject, i may be a little biased in here but out of what I said before the video is really well made and tackles a good key point in the story of the region (though not all of them and that also bring some concerns) and might provide a good introduction to the history of this region.

PS: Just took a look at the comments and it varies for valid criticism of the video, compliments, dumb comments (that I obviously saw coming such as “brutes who didn’t innovate”, “they were just too dumb to create the wheel”, and “blacks were enslaving blacks so trans Atlantic slave trade not that bad”) and there’s also one or two hoteps that really were a turn off.
