I’m planning out a full reroof of my no slope epdm (residential) roof. The current low spots are very apparent, and I plan on using a combination of sumped drains and tapered board to correct for lack of slope/low spots. Here the problem: the current epdm roof was laid over top of an old BUR system.

During recent repairs, I chiseled away at an area under the drip edge prior to patching and flashing. I found the BUR to be roughly 1-1/2” thick. I’m unsure if this thickness is more or less maintained throughout the roof or if it is primarily at the perimeter.

Regardless, am I able order my tapered panels prior to demoing the old BUR? What I mean by that is this: is it likely that the low spots in my decking will mirror the current low spots? Would it be a wise move to opt for panels with a greater slope than “necessary” to make up for variances of these unknowns?

I hope that makes sense.
