What (if anything) have I been "accidentally" signing?
I went deaf on my left several years ago. I was in my early/mid twenties. I don't know asl (though I can very slowly and awkwardly finger sign), but I've noticed that I've intuitively started to gesture more.
If I keep a hand with all fingers in a fist, except for an extended pointed finger (as seen on Wikipedia's page for Index Finger), keep it in an upright position throughout and move it from my non-deaf ear toward the person I'm trying to hear (or just generally "outward")... does that mean something specific in ASL? That's what's seemed most intuitive for me for "Sorry? I'm trying to hear you?", usually accompanied by me saying "sorry", "what was that?" or "[insert phrase I thought I caught], right?". Just wondering if it would mean something else/specific to someone fluent in ASL. Or if I'm gtg on my little impromptu signals.
