"The one in the middle."

[I accidentally deleted my post when I was trying to edit some spellings and add more details :( ]

(I work at a cafe that is in a local grocery store chain)

Customer came in and ordered a small coffee with some cream and then he wanted a muffin from my pastry case. I said okay! What muffin would you like (I had six muffins in rolls of three one up front and one behind).

"The one in the middle." There's two in the middle blueberry and lemon poppy seed.

"Okay, do you want the blueberry one?"

"The one in the middle."

"Oh okay...so lemon poppy?"

"I don't know what muffins you have, the one in the middle."

"Well, we have double chocolate, chocolate chip, blueberry, lemon-"

"Look there's a right side and a left side, I want one in the middle. I don't care, I want the one in the middle. Why are you asking so many questions. I have hearing aids and I can't hear well because there's fans all around me (there wasn't). So give me the one in the middle."

This went on for another minute of him increasingly yelling at me and kept telling me he wanted the one in the middle. I immediately told him if he kept yelling at me and not letting me continue to serve him I was going to cancel the transaction. A store manager came immediately and got him to direct his anger at her. She explained I was just doing my job and that we didn't understand what he meant by what he wanted the middle one. Said that people have food allergies and we just want to make sure we didn't give him something that'll get him sick. She even pointed at the muffins and asked him what he wanted. He yelled at her and said he didn't care. Eventually I just gave him a random muffin (not even from the middle but it was one of the lemon poppy seed from the side) and we called it good. He ate the muffin and drank his coffee without a care and left.

His reasoning on why he was yelling at me was because his hearing aids has AI in them and they were telling him something different than what he was hearing I guess. (?)

Two other managers came over to my cafe to check on me and we ended up making fun of the guy when he left and said the next time he'd show up again we'd roundhouse kick him (jokingly). Anyways, I don't understand why customers get upset when we are trying to get their orders right by asking them questions, sorry I'm doing my job. I even pointed at the muffins in the middle and yet he wouldn't bother to look at just tell me what muffin he wanted. Just kept saying, "In the middle, in the middle." Hopefully he never comes back.

On the bright side, my team and I now made it an inside joke where we just fake yell at each other and say the "one in the middle." I still love my job but god, customers like him make you wanna consider switching careers.

By the way muffin guy, I never rebrewed the coffee like I said did. I committed a barista sin, I gave you lukewarm coffee.
