Things I wish I knew before making a queen size puff quilt:
I’m a beginner when it comes to sewing. I saw puff quilts on Pinterest and fell in love with them . all I’ve sewn before is small projects and nothing that requires very much precision. here are some things I wish I had known and researched before diving in-
1: these are HEAVY. I used 2.5kgs of polyfill, plus the backing fabric (a fleecy fabric) and the front and back layer of material for each puff pocket, this baby is weighty to put onto my bed each morning 😅
2: ironing each pocket before stuffing is essential. I got lazy with this thinking that once they were stuffed it would even out creasing. I was wrong. I now have permanent creases.
3: an enormous puff quilt was ambitious for my first quilt ever. this tested my patience and ability.
4: polyfilL creeps its way out of cotton fabric. the floral squares are not 100% cotton, but the plain colours are, which means I’m always picking off little balls of the stuffing that work their way out of the weave. this bothers me irrationally daily. 😂
5: a large space is ideal to sew this together. I do not have a large table for sewing. just a small desk and a round dining table. as I got further along the weight of this hanging off my table meant it pulled at my machine and my triceps got a workout just holding it in place.
6: extra needles are needed. I broke 3 machine needles during this project. thankfully I had a stockpile of spares.
7: making one puff quilt will start a love/hate obsession. I’m now working on 3 others for friends and family.
I wouldn’t change a thing and I learnt so much making this. I’m really happy with how it turned out and my boyfriend and I love the finished result. 🥰
