Currently rebuilding a boundary retaining wall that was about to collapse onto footpath. We did dial-before-you-dig and found the gas line way closer to the surface than anticipated. It's almost the same level as the footpath. I've been told that they should be buried 600mm deep?

We didn't rupture the gas mains, but the gas company came out and shut off my gas at the meter. They rang the day after and said they will send through a quote to have the mains pipe buried to a compliant level. I always thought that any gas infrastructure before my meter is considered their responsibility, not mine. Now they're wanting me to pay possible 10's of thousands of dollars before I can have access to gas again. Sucks not having any hot showers or the ability to cook now that we're coming up to winter.

Surely the fact that they are aware of illegal, non-compliant gas infrastructure that they installed, and are choosing not to do anything about it until I cough up $$$$$$ is gross negligence, no?
