[Review] Timex Waterbury Quartz GMT ($68 Jomashop Pick-Up) – Incredible IST/Nepal Offset Capability with a Few Quirks

I wanted a dedicated GMT watch. I already own a simple, reliable Casio Royale and travel abroad about once a year, but my profession requires me to stay in constant touch with home and constantly be aware of the time back in India.
Since Indian Standard Time (IST) has a 30-minute offset (+5:30) from major timezones (and Nepal has a +5:45 offset), most standard GMT watches (Swiss or Japanese movements) simply can't track it because their GMT hands jump only in full 1-hour increments. I could only identify a handful of budget options that handle fractional offsets.
Enter the Timex Waterbury Quartz GMT.
This uses a proprietary Timex quartz movement (not a Ronda), allowing you to track time zones with 30-minute or 15-minute offsets (+5:30 IST / +5:45 Nepal) at a very reasonable price.
Cute retro looks, very light to wear, and fits nicely across multiple wrist sizes—including my wife's and my young daughter's.
It felt quite cheap upon unpacking and handling, but it honestly looks and feels significantly pricier once it’s on the wrist.
At $68 from Jomashop, it gets plenty of wrist time and love alongside the other watches in my collection.
I couldn't fully figure out the setting mechanism for the GMT hand across different crown positions, as it sweeps when using the pusher at any crown position. I have set it to German time for now.
The crown stopped engaging to change the date after a couple of days of usage. Since it was purchased via Jomashop for $68, there's no point in pursuing a international warranty claim. A local repair shop assured me they can set it right for ₹600. For now, manually freezing the date for a day once in a 30-day month does the trick.
There are perhaps a few too many colors on the dial, and the seconds hand is almost invisible at a glance.
Despite the date wheel issue and busy dial, you really can't complain for the price. It solves a specific timezone problem that $1,000+ GMT watches fail at, and it gets plenty of love on my wrist.
