1. Talk to your company first
A lot of people think, “I’ll just handle this quietly on my own,” and that’s where things go wrong.
You prep everything, then suddenly ask your company for docs like recommendation letters or employment verification… and that’s the first time they’re hearing about it?
Yeah — not great.
What can happen:
- “You have to go through our law firm.”
- “We can’t provide that.”
And just like that, you’re stuck.
Some companies:
- Require you to use their internal legal team
- Or won’t cooperate if you bring your own attorney
👉 Before hiring a lawyer, talk to your company. Seriously.
2. Don’t pick just anyone as your petitioner
Especially your partner — strongly not recommended.
If things go sideways, they technically hold power in your petition.
There have been real cases where this turned into leverage.
Not trying to scare anyone — just being real.
A lot of people overlook these basics and end up in messy situations.
Check this stuff before you start. It’ll save you a lot of stress later.
