Beautiful First Trip to PR
Just returned from a lovely trip to Puerto Rico for the first time! I had so many questions going into this trip and did a lot of research, and then we loved every second of it.
We spent 3 nights in Luquillo (mostly other places but it was a great home base) and 4 in Rincon.
If anyone has specific questions about our itinerary or what we did, I’d love to share! I just wanted to say some of the main things I learned and loved!!
First of all, the island is truly beautiful, and I was so glad we got to see so much of it.
El Yunque is definitely a must!
We took a day trip out to Culebra and it was amazing! Truly stunning beaches. We took a plane which was great. I read alot of you recommending that. But to anyone that doesn’t know- it is a tiny plane. Mine had 6 people on it. You don’t go through security or anything. However, It felt super safe and the landings and everything were super smooth.
Driving was an interesting experience. In mainland US we are used to quick, aggressive and impatient drivers. The drivers in Puerto Rico are quick, don’t use blinkers, but are VERY friendly. We were so confused when they would stop for us and flash us to go. By the end of the trip we’d do the same for others. If you leave the main roads, beware the roads are very small and windy. They are what would be a one-way road here in the states. But we had no problems.
I was super worried that I’d regret our lack of time spent in San Juan. We spent about three hours there and it was honestly enough for us. It was a beautiful town, but we were hot and kinda shopped out. I’m sure this would be absolutely different if we drink, but we don’t. I’m sure the night life is great there, but during the day you just shop and walk around it seems. I’m glad we visited, but also glad we didn’t spend a night there!
We seriously loved Rincon so much. Everyone was super kind, food was great, and it totally felt like time slowed down there. It was awesome to see a different side of the island.
Lastly, for anyone who is concerned, most everyone we encountered spoke pretty good English! My partner actually knows Spanish, but we are both very white so everyone greeted us in English just by looking at us lol. I think it is not defintely helpful to know some phrases or even greetings in Spanish, but you will likely be ok if not.
We are so excited to go back one day and see more of the island!
