In one of their interviews, a Valve engineer mentioned they're open to exploring alternative strap solutions to better serve the community's needs. Combined with the fact that they've already released the Steam Frame's CAD files for creative use, it feels pretty safe to say we'll see more strap options in the future whether from Valve themselves or third-party manufacturers.

Most of us here have experience with other headsets, so I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas for what you'd want in a replacement strap. But first, let's quickly break down what the default strap includes:

  • Battery
  • Elastic strap
  • Integrated speakers
  • IPD adjustment wheel
  • USB 2.0 for charging and data
  • micro SD slot

Valve went all-in by packing a lot of stuff into the strap that’s usually kept in the main headset body. This makes designing a good alternative strap pretty challenging for third parties, since they’ll need solid solutions for all those integrated features. It raises both complexity and the final price.

What could an alternative strap look like?

Everyone has different preferences, so there won’t be a single perfect design, but here are some things I’d personally love to see:

3.5mm headphone jack

Since audio runs through the strap connector, it should be possible to route it to a standard audio port instead of the built-in speakers.

Main + hot-swappable battery combo

Moving the battery to the back of the strap was a no-brainer for comfort. However, the capacity may feel limiting for heavy users. A main battery around 4,000–5,000mAh combined with a hot-swappable 10,000mAh pack (similar to BoboVR straps) would basically solve the runtime issue for most people and preserve the true wireless experience.

Elite-style or halo-style options

More design choices for better weight distribution and to better suit different head shapes and preferences.

Proper on/over-ear headphones

The default speakers reportedly suffer from audio leakage and sit in an awkward position. Something closer to the Valve Index’s on-ear design or even Quest 3-style near-ear speakers would be a big upgrade. Ideally, they’d be removable so users can easily wear their own headphones.

Improved Breathability and Hygiene

Replaceable face and head pads, better ventilation to reduce sweat and blurred lenses and possibly an optional fan solution like the one on the BoboVR S3 Pro.

What do you guys think? What features would you want in an alternative Steam Frame strap?
