UChicago TED sophomore transfer - is submitting the IB Final grade really "Optional?"
Hi everyone,
I’m currently an incoming freshman at a T20 university. UChicago has been my absolute dream school for years, and I’m planning to apply for a Sophomore Transfer via TED (Transfer Early Decision). By the way I am an international student who is willing to Full-pay the tuition.
My concern is my IB Final results. While my high school transcript (Junior year) is solid and my SAT is 1550, I’m certain I bombed my IB Finals. The scores will be significantly lower than my predicted grades and honestly, they aren't reflective of my actual academic ability.
UChicago’s policy says high school / IB scores are optional for transfer applicants. However, since sophomore transfers only have one semester of college grades on their transcript at the time of review, I’m worried that:
- Will not reporting my IB Final scores significantly hurt my chances, even with a 1550 SAT and a solid high school GPA?
- If it does hurt, can a perfect 4.0 GPA in my first semester at a T20 school effectively "cover" or outweigh the missing IB scores?
I’m confident I can maintain a 4.0 at my current university, and I have strong research-oriented ECs and solid connections for letters of rec. But the "black box" of how much weight UChicago places on IB Finals for 1st-year transfers is stressing me out.
Should I just go for it and leave the IB scores out, or is the missing Final score a dealbreaker for a school as academically rigorous as Chicago?
Would love to hear from anyone who got in without submitting final IB/AP scores or anyone who has insight into the TED process. Thanks!
