Is an Econ undergrad actually useful or just “nice-to-have”?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been seriously considering taking Economics as my undergraduate degree, but I keep seeing very mixed opinions about how useful it actually is in real life. They also say to just major in finance and get a Masters in Econ.

I am from SEA and I am very passionate about economics. I read many economics articles in my free time and my dream Job is to work at ADB HQ which is in my home country.

Some people say it’s super versatile and a strong foundation for finance, policy, consulting, data, etc. Others say it’s too theoretical unless you pair it with something like math, stats, or computer science—and that by itself it doesn’t really lead to strong job prospects. I have heard people saying that economists are the "plumbers of science" and that "the only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable".

So I wanted to ask people here who’ve actually studied it or worked in related fields:

  • Is an econ undergraduate degree useful on its own, or does it need to be combined with another skill set?
  • What kind of careers did it actually open for you?
  • If you could go back, would you still pick econ as your undergrad?

I just want a realistic view before committing years to it.

Should I just major in Finance and take some econ classes and get my Masters in Economics much later?

Appreciate any honest input.

Studying in Cyprus

Hey everyone

I’m considering studying Economics in the Republic of Cyprus (not the occupied north) and I wanted to ask if it’s actually worth it in terms of:

  • quality of education
  • university reputation
  • job opportunities after graduation (in Cyprus of course)
  • student life and living costs

Any recommendations on Universities I should consider in Cyprus?

I do eventually plan on working in mainland EU but I also want to work in Cyprus for at least 5 years to repay the kindness of the Cypriot people and government that they have shown to me.

Would really appreciate honest opinions — both positives and negatives. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I’m an international student planning to apply to public universities in Spain for a bachelor’s in economics, and I’d really appreciate some advice.

I’m trying to find good universities with strong econ programs, preferably outside Madrid and Barcelona to try and save money (open to smaller cities or underrated places ). Also, are there any public universities that offer economics in English, or at least partly in English?

Would love to hear:

  • Which public universities are best for economics?
  • Are there any hidden gems outside the big cities?
  • How common are English-taught econ programs in public unis?
  • Anything I should know as an international applicant?

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to study Economics in Italy as an international student (from the Philippines) and I’m trying to figure out the best city/university combination.

My main priorities are:

  • Low cost of living / affordable student life
  • Public university (tuition-friendly if possible)
  • Good Economics program
  • Opportunities for internships during or after studies
  • Reasonable chances of getting part-time work as a student

Right now, I’m considering Naples and southern cities like in Campania and Sicily because they're cheaper than the north and I also like the landscape and simple life style but I’m not sure which ones are actually worth it long-term for career opportunities in economics/finance/business.

I’ve heard mixed opinions about studying in the north vs south of Italy, especially in terms of job and internship access after graduation.

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people currently studying in Italy or who have experience with economics programs there.

Thanks in advance!
