4-2-2 Sailor IRR Request

Looking for advice.

I completed 4 years of active duty and later found out I was a 4-2-2 Sailor, so I owe 2 years in the SELRES. I submitted an IRR request through NSIPS, but one of the final approvers kicked it back asking me to explain my hardship. My CCC/CoC haven’t really been much help, so I’m wondering what a strong IRR/hardship package actually looks like.

I know the Reserves are “only one weekend a month,” but it’s been mentally draining for me. I’m already receiving VA disability compensation, so I don’t really get much financial benefit from drilling. My civilian job is on a 24/7 watch floor that sometimes requires weekend work, and I’ve had to miss work because of drill weekends. I’ve also missed many family events because they fell on drill weekends.

The biggest issue is my mental health. I honestly get anxiety just thinking about the Reserves, and I feel like it’s gotten worse since leaving active duty. When I explained this to my chain of command, they recommended I go through medical to see if I’m even qualified to serve instead of pushing up
my IRR request.

My CCC also told me my 6-year obligation ends based on my DEP date, not my boot camp date, so I have roughly 6-7 months left.
I know a lot of people will probably say “just suck it up,” but I’m genuinely trying to understand my options.

Has anyone had success with an IRR request based on hardship?

What did your IRR package include?

Is medical really my only option if the primary issue is mental health?

Thanks in advance.
