First UniFi setup for my 1500 sq ft townhome – looking for feedback/advice before I buy
Coming from an ASUS mesh setup that has honestly been frustrating, especially with WiFi 6E stability, roaming, and random disconnect issues. Decided to finally move over to UniFi for something more reliable and expandable. The townhome is around 1500 sq ft across 2 floors and currently has around 40 wireless devices with the majority being IoT/smart home devices, plus around 8 wired devices. I also run Home Assistant, Pi-hole, Apple TVs/streaming devices, gaming PCs/consoles, and have local fiber internet.
Current plan is a Cloud Gateway Fiber (no storage), 2x U7 Pro XGs, 2x Flex Minis, and 2x Flex Mini 2.5Gs. All Ethernet runs terminate into a low voltage in-wall panel located in the master closet. One Flex Mini will live inside the panel since the Cloud Gateway won’t have enough ports by itself. The second Flex Mini will go in the living room, and the two Flex Mini 2.5Gs will go in the back bedrooms.
For AP placement, one U7 Pro XG will be downstairs in the foyer/stairwell area, and the second will be upstairs outside the linen closet near the bedrooms. One AP will be powered directly from the Cloud Gateway PoE and the second AP will use a PoE injector. I am somewhat limited on where I can go back and add more ethernet drops in the ceiling. The current placement is the easiest addition to the current setup.
I’m planning on having separate Main, IoT, Streaming, and Guest VLANs/networks. Main goals are reliable roaming, better IoT stability, strong 5GHz coverage throughout the home, long-term reliability, and hopefully future proofing this setup for several years.
A few questions:
Anything you would change with this layout/setup?
Is it overkill with dual U7 Pro XGs for a 1500 sq ft townhome?
Any concerns with my AP placement?
Any recommendations for UniFi settings coming from ASUS mesh?
Historically, does UniFi usually support hardware like this for at least 5 years?
Attached a rough network/floorplan diagram as well. Would appreciate any feedback before I start ordering everything.
