Could you explain the ”passion” for geology

I study geology, and follow geology related subs. Everybody always talks about how being passionate is the most important factor for survival in this field.

The way I interpret it is passion = willingness to sacrifice. I can certainly understand why a sculptor should be passionate in order to make a career out of it, but why geology? What are the sacrifices? Why is there such a strong emphasis on being passionate?

I’m from northern Europe btw.
