This Roman gate once guarded the northern edge of the empire and almost no one has heard of it

In the hills of northwestern Romania, near the village of Moigrad, stands one of the most impressive Roman gates you’ll ever see. This is Porolissum.

The Romans built this massive gate as the main entrance to their fort at Porolissum in 106 AD.

They designed it with twin towers and thick stone walls to control the key mountain pass into Dacia and protect the northern frontier. Behind it stood the headquarters, barracks, and a busy military settlement that guarded the edge of the empire for nearly 170 years.

The gate you see is a reconstruction of the original Porta Praetoria. Still standing after almost 2,000 years.
