Should I join the Army

When I was little, I used to watch guys like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Chuck Norris and think the commando stuff was the coolest thing ever. As I got older, it stopped being just about movies and became more about wanting to challenge myself for real. I realized I’m drawn to hard environments that require discipline, teamwork, leadership, and mental toughness.

That’s why I’ve been planning to commission as an Army officer after finishing my bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, branch Infantry, and later pursue Special Operations. For me, it’s not because I think it’s glamorous or easy. I want to lead from the front, challenge myself mentally and physically, and grow through difficult experiences that force me to perform under pressure. I want to be in an environment where standards are high and people hold each other accountable.

Cybersecurity is still important to me and I know it can provide a great career financially, but deep down I know I would regret never taking a shot at the path I’ve thought about for years. I don’t want to spend my life wondering “what if.”

What makes it harder is that my parents are trying to guilt trip me out of joining because they’re worried and think it doesn’t make sense financially or because I’m 22 now instead of deciding in high school. I understand they care about me, but I don’t think there’s an age limit on pursuing something meaningful. I’d rather challenge myself and give everything I have toward something I truly believe in than play it safe and always wonder who I could’ve become if I tried.
