Can a large koi pond be used for something else? Or have to be dug out?

Looking at a home with a giant koi pond with a stone waterfall. Home has in ground pool, koi pond & waterfall are about equal in size vs the pool. Problem is we have a toddler & the koi pond looks like it needs work. It is also in the center of the yard randomly. The pool is on a side courtyard.

We could drain it until our youngest is older. Just two large bodies of water makes me nervous, the koi pond appears deep too.
