How to encourage my budgie to leave her cage?
Hi so this is Polly. Here's some background. She was from a neglectful home (months and months ago) but has always been kinda shy. It has taken months and months of work but she's finally really warmed up to me. She trusts me but isn't the affectionate type so no pets or anything.
So because I've finally been working I was working on getting her a nice new big cage (the one she came to me with is crappy. I've always disliked it. It's way to small but for family reasons it took me a minute to get a job)
Now the real issue. For months and months I've tried to get her to come out. Fly around and whatnot. Her cagemate before she passed loved it. But Polly seems to be very hesitant to come out. Obviously I want her to fly, exercise and explore. But it's also important when its time for the new cage.
So here's the dilemma. I've tried just leaving the doors open for a few hours. But she just looks at me like I'm an idiot and shows no interest in going out. I've tried to let her perch on my finger but physical contact is something she pretty much never likes and has never perched on me before so. And then I've tried using an actual wooden perch to try and get her to step on it and come out (this is how her cagemate used to do) and she just ignores it. I have some treats but I guess I've just been worried that tricking her outside will ruin the whole experience for her.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do?
