Timing meals around workouts

I’m just starting my fitness journey and am starting with a focus on weight loss first. I am trying to time gym sessions around life, including trying not to eat too close to bedtime. A quick search of my question “Is it better to eat before or after a workout?” basically resulted in the answer of “Yes.”

Hitting the gym before work seems simple enough: maybe a quick bite before the gym, then breakfast between the gym and work. Or should that be reversed? Evenings are more confusing. I assume some quick protein between work and the gym, but then what about after? I may get home well after 8pm, and I generally try to be in bed around 10-10:30. Are there general guidelines around this? Just do what you can? What rules about eating at night overrule other rules about timing meals? Or am I overthinking this?
