Miserable and want to quit until I can get a better position...what are my options?
I've been with the State for 12 years and have tons of experience and skills. Im absolutely miserable at my current Program to the point where Im depressed, dreading the work day, and feel ultimately hopeless. I've submitted 100+ job applications since May 2025 and have had 5 interviews since September. 4 of the 5 interviews dont even notify me that I didn't get the job - im just ghosted (its been months since the interview). I follow up with emails but I get crickets.
Im truly at the end of my patience and cannot continue in this Program. Im debating quitting but dont want to lose my benefits. Im wondering if any CalHR folks here can shed some light on the process. If I separate for a short time, then get rehired, will I lose all my leave balances and benefits? Is there a grace period? Is there an option to request to be moved to a lateral or literally ANY other position? If so, how does that process work?
I feel so desperate and know I cannot continue being miserable. Im even happy to RTO if it means working for a different Program. Thanks for any advice or laying out my options!
