Hey everyone — I’m currently looking into enlisting in the Air Force and am strongly considering a cyber AFSC.
Before I commit, I want a realistic understanding of what life in that pipeline actually looks like beyond the recruiting overview.
I’m trying to understand a few things from people who’ve actually gone through it:
- Training + workload reality: During tech school and first duty station, how demanding is the schedule in cyber AFSCs compared to what people expect going in?
- Cert timing (Security+ or similar): For those who came in with or earned Security+, when did you actually get it (before enlistment vs tech school vs later)? Did timing matter in practice at all?
- Early career bandwidth: In your first few years, how realistic is it to do additional education or certifications on top of the job, or is it mostly work-focused at that stage?
- General expectations vs reality: What was the biggest gap between what you expected going in vs what actually happened in cyber roles?
I’m trying to make an informed decision and avoid unrealistic expectations before enlisting. Any honest insight is appreciated.
