Gen X couple relocating to Phoenix area

My husband and I are considering relocating to the Phoenix metro area and I’d appreciate some local insight from people who actually live there, not just our realtor who is pushing a Zillow fantasy.

Husband is originally from west Glendale but moved away about 25 years ago, so a lot has changed. I’m a Cleveland, Ohio native that has visited several areas on the state at different times over the past few years. We understand the heat and are specifically looking for suburbs/neighborhoods rather than Phoenix proper. To be transparent, I am willing to look at north Phoenix, if it fits our needs and lifestyle.

What we’re looking for:

- Established suburbs with a good quality of life

- Homeownership (not luxury-level pricing)

- Good access to everyday amenities, healthcare, shopping, etc.

- Reasonable commute access to industrial/mechanical job opportunities

- More suburban than rural

- Some personality/culture would be nice, but we’re not looking for nightlife

- Not especially interested in 55+ retirement communities at this stage

We’ve been looking at places like Goodyear, Surprise, Buckeye, north Glendale, and possibly Maricopa (I'm super iffy on this tbh), but we’re very open to hearing what locals think — including places we may not have considered. However, we do not have a Chandler or Anthem-level budget if you know what I mean. No America's Castles or Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous over here. Just two regular people ready for their third act without snow and ridiculous humidity. It's 48° and 79% humidity as I type this...

Would especially appreciate honest feedback about:

- Areas that look good online but aren’t great in reality

- Traffic/commute realities

- Cost vs. value

- Which areas feel isolated vs. connected

- Stable, comfortable, low-drama

- Areas that feel established rather than chaotic

- Neighborhoods with good community reputation

Thanks in advance. We’re trying to make a thoughtful long-term move, not just chase cheap housing. We’re mainly trying to find areas that feel livable, practical, and well-maintained without stretching into ultra-expensive master-planned territory.
