I'm (43f AUS) doing a solo road trip in August. I'm spending a week in Queenstown with family, they leave and I carry on.
So far this is what I'm doing:
August 6: Queenstown - Tekapo
August 7: Tekapo - Christchurch
August 9: Christchurch - Hokitika
August 10: Hokitika - Franz Josef
August 11: Franz Josef - Wanaka
August 13: Wanaka - Dunedin
August 14: Dunedin - Te Anau
August 16: Te Anau - Queenstown
August 18: Fly out
I know it's only the highlights, but I plan on coming back to do the North Island maybe next year and hit up any of the South Island that I need to come back to. I also really like driving.
I'm not really into hardcore hiking and camping, and I'm going to get a RAV4 or Corolla Cross or similar and book hotels rather than a van. Van life is not for me.
Any reviews on A Rentals or EZI Car Rental?
Have you found any hidden gems on the road between these places? Unexpectedly amazing activities/food? Do you think this is a terrible path to take?
