Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #52: Protostar - Echoes of the Past

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #52: Protostar - Echoes of the Past

This is one of my favorite Protostar songs, and seems to have become a bit of a forgotten gem. This song has very clean yet fat production and also establishes a dark adventurous atmosphere that develops into something more uplifting at the end when it brings in some arps as a B-section in the second drop.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #51: Ephixa & Stephen Walking - Matches (Mr FijiWiji Remix) (feat. Aaron Richards)

This is an incredible remix from what I would probably still consider my favorite remix package on the label. Overall, this is also somewhat of an overlooked song from Mr FijiWiji. Stylistically, it feels similar to his Dogma EP. It’s relaxing and pensive with some catchy vocal chops characteristic of his style.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #50: Bishu - Get To Know Me (feat. Mister Blonde)

This song, even with its questionable lyrics, is ridiculously catchy. The drops also have some pretty cool production.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #49: Rezonate - Revolt (feat. Amelia Rose)

We’re going back to 2012 with this one—a beautiful and forgotten melodic dubstep song from Rezonate. If the mixing were better, this song would be incredible, but even as is, it’s still an emotional song.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #48: Stephen Walking - Odin’s Ghost

This was the second to last release on the label from the artist whom I initially discovered Monstercat through. As such, all SW songs hold a special place in my heart, including this one, even though I had already been following Monstercat for 5 years when this came out. Stephen Walking goes for a dark and minimal vibe in the first half but switches the mood into something more uplifting starting in the midsection.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #47: Just A Gent - URCA (feat. Olivia Grace)

This is one of the most unusual songs on the label, in my view. The chord progressions are fascinating, constantly switching between B major, Bb major, and G minor, as well as toying around with some other keys like E minor and B Phrygian Dominant. The song takes its time to establish a mysterious atmosphere before leading into a minimal and glitchy Midtempo drop. This song is definitely a hidden gem.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #46: OBLVYN - Alive

This was OBLVYN’s incredible debut, which still has under 100k views to this day. This was the song that made me fall in love with OBLVYN’s style and elevated her to among my favorite Monstercat artists. That synth line is amazing and is what I love most about her style. The piano is also beautiful. There’s too much to praise this song for to write about here.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #45: Mitchell Claxton - Wuxia

Two trance songs in a row! Man, where do I even start with my praises for this song? Everything about this song and the way it develops is executed to perfection. The mix of European strings, East Asian plucked strings, and vocals in the intro is magnificent and gorgeous. The first minimal trance drop is dark and mysterious, gradually building energy for a couple minutes. The midsection brings back those gorgeous strings, before revealing a melody that slowly gets more and more layered until it turns into a huge uplifting trance drop. Finally, the song concludes by returning to dark minimal trance, finally ending with a sparkling and dark C# minor chord. This song is mostly remembered for having held the record of longest song on Monstercat for 9 years, but as a song, it’s also a masterpiece.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #44: ilan Bluestone pres. Stoneblue - Hypnotized (feat. Emma Hewitt)

In this song, Stoneblue gradually builds up a euphoric and blissful atmosphere that eventually leads to a beautiful uplifting trance drop in the second half. Personally, I have often forgotten this song, but remembering it is a nice experience.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #43: Rameses B - Never Forget

The title of this song certainly describes how I feel about it. Over the years, I have never forgotten about how beautiful this song is. It’s a bit somber yet blissfully peaceful and comforting in nature as well. Rameses B also shows here that he’s a master of ear candy textures, with little pops, clicks, and breaths enhancing the dreamy atmosphere.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #42: Banaati - No Time

This is one of my favorite Monstercat Silk songs. Released in 2022, this is the B-side to Banaati’s “Blossom.” In this song, Banaati evokes bittersweet and comforting emotions, along with a touch of whimsicality. Overall, this is a great song to sit outside and smile at nature to.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #41: Soulero - The World

I was just listening to this song last night in the shower. Classic uplifting Soulero! This song carries the same wholesome and optimistic tone that I love about Soulero’s Monstercat stuff. This is now the second and definitely not the last Soulero song I will revive!

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #40: Kill Paris - Played Out (feat. Dutch Robinson)

This was Kill Paris’s last song on Monstercat, concluding his unfortunately short tenure of one year on the label. This song has memorable catchy vocals from Dutch Robinson, who is (I think) the earliest born artist to ever release on Monstercat, who was born in November 1945, making him now 80 years old and 73 for the release of this song. This song also features clean nu disco production from Kill Paris, and an amazing synth solo at the end, followed by a catchy halftime (dubstep, if you will) outro.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #39: Heard Right & Meeting Molly - Several Times

This is an overlooked lovely and calming B-side to Heart Right & Meeting Molly’s 2022 “Mirror of Erised.” This song makes lovely use of the Dorian mode, and the piano chords are smooth and soothing. The vocal chops also add to the atmosphere.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #38: Direct & Elliot Berger - Anticipation

This is one of my favorite Direct songs. Something about this song invokes a unique feeling that I can’t quite describe, but it’s kind of a mix of longing, nostalgia, and dreaminess. All in all, this song is gorgeous and managed to tug on your heart without any vocals. The piano work is also really lovely. While not one Direct’s least popular songs, it also seems to be mostly forgotten nowadays.

I had a dream last night involving this remix, which reminded me of how good it is. Throughout this remix, Notaker gradually builds emotion, first taking us through the dark and minimal first drop and eventually building towards a cathartic release at the second drop. This remix package seems largely forgotten to time, yet it contains some great remixes. I’ve always thought that if this remix weren’t a remix, it would fit stylistically very well on Notaker’s Genesis EP, which came out just a few months later.

It’s been a decade now since I fell in love with this song, and every once in a while I rediscover how amazing it is. This song’s main claim to fame is having been part of the original Monstercat Podcast intro sequence. As a whole though, this song has generally been lost to time, which is a shame because it’s beautiful. Something about Soulero’s Monstercat songs is able to evoke strong feelings of bittersweet endearment and nostalgia for me. It’s like it makes me look back on my life at the time and think “aww… I miss those times.” This song does exactly that.

Before he became Afinity, former Pixel Terror member Ahrya released a double sided single as Bosquet. I’ve always loved this song (had an Afinity for it, if you will…), and to this day it only has 17k views. This song is very dreamy and whimsical. The vocal chops, which are recognizable across all the music Ahrya makes (whether as Pixel Terror, Bosque, or Afinity), add to the dreamy quality of this song. I’d love to hear him revive this project.

If you want a song that describes itself in its title, look no further than this song off of Mr FijiWiji’s 2015 “Growing Up” EP. The piano on this song is lovely and calming, and the subtle tick-tock pattern of the gentle snares contributes to the soothing atmosphere.

I think this is the highest-viewed song I've revived thus far, but it still has under a million views at this time so I'm still counting it. This song is absolutely incredible and is probably my favorite Koven song. The vocals from Katie are really beautiful here, expressing a sense of dramatic urgency. Everything in the song points to and builds toward the second drop, which releases all of the emotions built throughout the song in a stunning euphoric explosion that causes chills to pulsate throughout my body. This is a special one.
