Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #98: TwoThirds & Laura Brehm - Waking Dreams (Insan3Lik3 Remix)

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #98: TwoThirds & Laura Brehm - Waking Dreams (Insan3Lik3 Remix)

We’re going way back to 2012 with a remix from one of Monstercat’s first remix packages. Insan3Lik3 delivers a very laid back and carefree-feeling yet emotional remix that feels very different from the original, despite both versions being chill. This showcases Insan3Lik3’s ability to create lovely laid back atmospheres, similar to what you can hear in songs like Open Hour, We Are The Robots, and Rescue Me. He also includes a very catchy vocal chop rework of the original vocals.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #97: Tut Tut Child - Eat Me

In my opinion, this song is a classic and would be well remembered if it had been uploaded / on a compilation. This song is just 2010s TTC being himself with fun Dorian energy.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #96: Julian Calor - Space Flute

This was Julian Calor’s amazing debut, already demonstrating his skill in using what I like to call “mijor” tonality, where the whole song is constantly a blend or back and forth between Eb minor and Eb major. All the Melodies here are great and very nostalgic.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #95: Mindsight & Duumu - What Feels Right

This is a really beautiful and nostalgic song from Mindsight & Duumu. This is one of those 2017 songs that instantly brings me right back to summer 2017 when I hear it. That was probably the time period where I was the most excitedly following every single Monstercat release, so the memories feel very nostalgic. I rarely see this gem discussed nowadays.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #94: Haywyre & Galimatias - Voice of Reason

While I am aware that this song has over a million views on MrSuicideSheep, it seems this song is mostly forgotten by the Monstercat community. Two Fold Part 1, I can pretty confidently say, is my favorite album ever released on Monstercat, and probably my favorite album of all time. I know it’s not on the label anymore, but I’m still gonna revive it anyway. This song in particular is soothing and smooth, and the lyrics and song title are actually quite comforting to me. I have an anxiety disorder and OCD, and I feel like this song is a voice of reason in my head telling me everything is gonna be okay and begging me to listen.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #93: Vicetone - Heartbeat (Rameses B Remix)

This whole remix package is a forgotten gem. Unfortunately it’s been removed from Monstercat, with only the Rameses B remix remaining as part of 013. I still plan to revive other remixes here later though. That said, I think Rameses B’s remix is a standout. It’s his classic melodic dubstep style with all of his signature glitches and sound effects that somehow further enhance the charm and joy of this remix. If anyone doubted that Rameses B could have his own signature sound after the Come & Go scandal, this remix would have surely proved otherwise.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song # 92: Dion Timmer - Leave (feat. Luma)

I literally just remembered this song and realized I should revive it today. I loved this song when it came out and I still do but I haven’t heard it in a long time. Luma’s vocals are well-delivered and add to the atmospheric and euphoric beauty that Dion Timmer establishes, building into euphoric future bass drops with vocal chops that enhance the emotion.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #91: Infected Mushroom - Lies and Deceptions (Bad Computer Remix)

Fun fact: Bad Computer has exactly 2 remixes on Monstercat, and both are remixes of Infected Mushroom. This is a bit reminiscent of Quiet Disorder—all three of their Monstercat remixes are remixes of Pegboard Nerds. This is definitely the less remembered of BC’s two IM remixes, but in all honesty, I think this one is my preference. The main motivic groove is extremely catchy.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #90: Stephen Walking - Hey

This definitely feels like one of Stephen Walking’s less remembered songs. This is a catchy song, and Stephen Walking does an amazing job with the percussion in the intro and outro. I miss this guy. He was the first EDM artist I ever listened to.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #89: Rameses B - Come & Go (feat. Charlotte Haining)

Although this song is mostly devoid of characteristic Rameses B features (with the exception of the start of the second drop, which is extremely Rameses B-coded), it’s still a beautiful euphoric house song. Rameses B is one of my top 10 favorite musicians. He’s always been extremely versatile and able to create emotional music in a variety of styles. Charlotte Haining’s vocals are also very nice and memorable here, contributing to the song’s beauty.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #88: Bossfight - Sovereign [Birthday Release Special]

Today is my 22nd birthday, and I fingered I’d commemorate by reviving a throwback to a song that came out on my 14th birthday, and a song that I’ve always been a big fan of. In this song, Bossfight establishes a creepy atmosphere from the beginning and cinematically builds into a wild and unique brostep drop. The world building here is very well done. This was a great birthday gift back in the day and still lives up to it today!

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #87: Tails & Leotie - Hyperventilate

This song makes really nice usage of the Dorian mode to feel uplifting and mildly funky. The vocals are well delivered and the synth melodies and chords support them really well. I especially love the melody that starts playing at 0:30.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #86: Notaker & Declan James - Who I Am (Extended Mix)

I may be a bit biased as this has always been a special song for me, and I’ve never forgotten it. However, I don’t see this song discussed much in the community at large anymore. For a period of time in 2017 and 2018, this was my favorite song of all time. I’ve always loved both the original and the extended mix, but over time, I have grown to have a strong preference for the extended mix. This version takes its time to build, initially dropping with a heavy and minimal drop, before gradually building up energy again to the euphoric drop.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #85: Fransis Derelle - Shapes (feat. Saysha)

This song has always been moving to me with its lyrics and big euphoric drops. I’d love to hear more of Fransis Derelle on Monstercat again.

The longest Monstercat-exclusive remix loop (I can find)

Sometimes I like to find remix loops of artists. An example on Monstercat would be the December 2020 remix exchange: Darren Styles remixed Au5 remixed Stonebank remixed Infected Mushroom remixed Pegboard Nerds remixed Rogue remixed Protostar remixed Darren Styles, returning to where we started. I wanted to see how long of a remix loop I could find using ONLY remixes released on Monstercat, and where the same artist cannot show up more than once. I found one with 13 artists / groups, and it goes as follows:

Tokyo Machine > Virtual Riot > Astronaut > Hellberg > TwoThirds > MUZZ > Pegboard Nerds > Rogue > Protostar > Darren Styles > Au5 > Stonebank > Gammer >  Tokyo Machine

Every remix was released on Monstercat. I wonder if there is a longer loop hidden somewhere on Monstercat. Stephen Walking, Mr FijiWiji, MUZZ, Virtual Riot, and Astronaut are useful artists to consider when constructing these remix loops, because they both have been remixed by many artists and have themselves remixed many other artists.

I’m curious if anyone else has searched for remix loops like this or even found a longer one within Monstercat

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #84: Meeting Molly & Odsen - Sati

This is a highly underrated song from the early Monstercat Silk era. The piano chords are lovely. These two musicians definitely know how to create a soothing atmosphere.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song #83: SMLE & Just A Gent - Revival

This catchy and groovy 2020 house song from SMLE and Just A Gent seems to be mostly forgotten. It’s a really nice song with lots of memorable motifs. I personally hear more Just A Gent in here than SMLE, but that’s not to say that SMLE didn’t contribute much.

Reviving a forgotten / underrated song # 82: Slippy - Chosen (feat. Armanni Reign)

This is an excellent example of Slippy’s ability to create invigorating dark metallic trap. He seems to have mostly moved on from this style, but he really created some gems in it. This song is also really boosted by Armanni Reign’s signature high quality performance.
