Filioque Question

So, why do we say the Holy Ghost proceeds from the Father and the Son in the Creed, when we do mean from the Father through the Son.

I'm just beginning to encounter this topic, so I don't think I'll be phrasing the question correctly, but I feel confident that you fine and learned people here will be able to rearticulate my question and then answer it: How do we address the Orthodox who say that the filioque says the Son is a hypostatic cause of the Holy Ghost? Do we believe the Son is? I don't think I really understand their objection in saying this - and this may just be the one guy I'm talking to's objection - and I don't know our own belief too well, I don't think.

Any resources to learn more about the history of the filioque, what it means, whether we believe the same thing as the Eastern Orthodox on the matter, and anything related would be very helpful. Forgive the very jumbled presentation of this post. Thank you and God bless.
