Experienced accountant not getting many interviews- resume issue, market, or something else?

I’m a CPA-qualified accountant in Australia with many years of experience across accounting and finance roles, including month-end, reporting, reconciliations, budgeting/forecasting, business partnering and process improvement.

I understand the market is competitive right now, but I’m honestly surprised by how few interview calls I’m getting despite applying consistently.

I’m starting to wonder:

  • Is my resume too broad?
  • Am I looking overqualified?
  • Are ATS systems filtering me out?
  • Are recruiters expecting resumes to be written differently now?

I’ve also started using AI tools to improve my resume and cover letters, but I’m not sure whether recruiters see that as helpful or a red flag.

Would really appreciate honest advice from recruiters, hiring managers, or anyone who has recently gone through the job market successfully.

What actually makes you stop and shortlist a resume these days?
