[CA] How should I ask for a raise?
Hi, I’m 23 and currently work for a nonprofit as a mental health case manager. For the last three months, I’ve also been covering responsibilities for a coworker who’s been on leave. That coworker officially extended their leave for another three months.
At a supervisor meeting, my boss announced that since I’ve already been filling in for this person, I’ll be taking on even more of their responsibilities going forward.
I’m planning to ask for a raise. I’ve seen people suggest that I should ask not only for a raise, but also some kind of temporary stipend or additional compensation since I’ve already been doing two jobs for the past three months. Does that sound reasonable?
I’m also unsure how much to ask for. I currently make $20/hr, but the average pay for my position in my area seems to be around $23–25/hr.
What’s the best way to approach this conversation? Should I bring it up directly with my boss first, or go to HR?
