I am in the middle of switching apartments. Last night, I forgot one of my bags in an s bahn station in berlin which had a lot of valuable items in it. I realised it 15 minutes after getting in the s bahn. I went back to the station and it was gone and I started tracking my macbook and airpods which were in that bag. I tracked it for 2 hours in different locations and eventually I found it. A homeless person in a park on a bench was sleeping on it. I retrieved my bag from him called the police immediately. I checked my bag and all of my stuff was moved around some pockets completely empty stuff moved from one pocket to another. All my electronic devices were in there and my wife’s jewellary were also in there. The things there were missing were my passports and my new apartments keys and i had apartments keys for 2 of my friends so in total 3 apartment keys and 3 different addresses in different areas of city far from each other. There were some old membership cards and some bank cards all from my home country so no german id or anything indicating that any address for the lost keys. There was no identification of any keys whatsoever. The police asked the guy he said he found the bag like this and those things were not in there. I am pretty sure that the person just threw away all those things and kept the things that were valuable in terms of money. Everything else was gone. I had some other small stuff in there too like a moisturiser, eye mask etc.
I am worried about the lost keys as the landlords would charge us a lot for the lost keys as they might push to change the locks for the whole building. I dont have liability insurance as I was planning to literally get it this week after moving in completely. I would have to pay a lot if all 3 landlords decide to change the lock for the whole building.
Can someone please guide me on how to proceed with this now? I have the case number for my police report. I told the police too that there was no indication for any address for the keys they asked me specifically that and I told them no and it is true even if someone has those keys they are really useless as they wont know the address for those.
Can the police automatically notify our landlords as they have the building address and my friends names too. We are still not sure on how to notify our landlords and how to approach this situation now?
