Sorry for the poor quality photos. I did my best. Meet Matt hooper. I got him(not sure if it's a male) from my dad's girlfriend who neglected the hell out of this poor guy. He came from a classroom(she's a teacher) where he was almost never fed, and they used flakes so he doesn't eat his pellets (food pellets). He's got fin rot pretty bad, his head/face is black, and his fins are torn up. Now for what I've done to help. I am a first-time fish owner. Last time I had one, I was like 5. So she just gifted me a fish, and I took him in (cost me almost 300 for all the supplies like conditioner, bacteria starter, test strips, hideouts, something for the stress of the transition cant remember the name but its specificly for bettas, other decorations and ofc the tank) and then I got him betta fix(?) For his fins because we didn't know he was in such poor condition and am on day two of his medicine. I feed him once a day(blood worms, a treat sometimes, and pellets) to avoid too much change/excitement and am planning on feeding him once a day for 6 out of the 7 days in a week(I was told to in order to avoid obesity) and I've had him for 3 days and today he ate his first pellet. I guess I'm on here to ask if there's anything else I can do?? He's got a hideout, a treasure chest that doesn't move so it won't hurt him, and soft fake plants so they don't rip/cut his already damaged fins. I've tested his water twice already and it's as good as It can be for a new tank(I checked thoroughly, like read it and searched three times to make sure the water was safe and it's all in good condition) I clean out any food he doesn't eat within 3-8 hours(I leave it there in hopes that he'll eat because he's only just started eating what I give him) and the filter is on medium strength and pointed at the heater and wall of his tank so the current isn't too strong for his hurt fins. I got him a hammock that I'm going to install when I change his water in 6 days so he can rest and I was worried about the plastic it's made of but a fellow betta owner at the store said she's never had it rip any fins??(it's a plastic leaf)
Is there anything I can do to make things better for him? Also it'd be cool if you guys could tell me if he's actually a male (I'm keeping the name no matter what tho)
EDIT: Thank you all for the advice I'm honestly overwhelmed with how many things I need to do but I'm determined to make sure he lives a good life, i will be doing thorough research into each solution and praying I can get him healthy. Thank you again 💓
