Hey everyone,
I’m 17 from the Netherlands and planning a longer solo trip starting this year. I’ll be traveling for about 3–4 months while I’m still 17, and then continue traveling for around a year after I turn 18.
For the first part, I’m trying to keep costs as low as possible so I can actually make the trip sustainable. I’ve been looking into work exchange options (hostels, surf camps, cafés, guesthouses, etc.), but I honestly haven’t been able to find a clear or reliable way to make this work at 17.
That’s why I’m asking here. I’m a bit stuck and trying to figure out what’s actually realistic versus what just sounds good online.
I’m not expecting to earn money at this stage, just trying to cover accommodation and food while gaining experience and meeting people.
I’d really appreciate any honest advice or experiences from people who have done something similar:

Is work exchange actually realistic for stretching a budget? If not, what’s a better way for stretching a budget?

Is 17 a major limitation or can it still work in some places?

Is it better to arrange things beforehand or just show up and ask around?

Any countries or setups that worked well for you?

Just trying to get a realistic picture before I commit to the plan.
Thanks a lot for any advice 🙏
