Laptop Suggestion

Country India

Budget Around ₹1,10,000 INR (~1.1 Lakhs)

Are you open to refurbs/used options? No, looking for a brand new machine.

Screen size 14-inch to 15.6-inch (highly prefer something sharp and clear like an OLED panel for long coding hours).

Weight limit Must be lightweight and highly portable (prefer under 1.8 kg). Strictly trying to avoid heavy 2.3+ kg laptops.

Purpose Primary: Machine Learning, Data Science, and Software Development. Secondary: Daily college productivity.

Form factor Sleek, premium clamshell or a high-quality 2-in-1 convertible.

Intended usage

  • Academic/AI Development: Python programming, heavy Data Pre-processing, running local SQL databases, managing Docker containers, and deploying Kubernetes clusters.
  • Deep Learning Frameworks: Building/testing custom Neural Networks (CNNs, RNNs) using PyTorch, prototyping RAG systems, and exploring Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • General: Split-screen document viewing, web browsing with dozens of open research tabs, and note-taking.

Desired battery life 8+ hours of productivity/coding mode so I can leave the charger in my room during college.

Priority (most to least important) Aesthetics/Design (No ugly gaming look), Portability/Weight, Performance, Battery life.

Info/Requirements

  • Design Preference: Strictly NO typical gaming laptops. I find them bulky, heavy, aesthetically unappealing, and filled with unnecessary RGB lights. I want a clean, minimalist, professional metallic chassis (similar to an ultrabook style).
  • GPU Dilemma: Open to advice here. I know I need an NVIDIA dedicated GPU (like an RTX 4060) with solid VRAM for local PyTorch/CUDA acceleration. However, if a premium thin-and-light (like an HP OmniBook X Flip or a MacBook Air M5) combined with heavy reliance on Cloud GPUs (Google Colab/Kaggle) is a better workflow for a modern AI student, I am highly open to that.
  • CPU: Current-gen high-efficiency processor (Intel Core Ultra 5/7, AMD Ryzen 7/9, or Apple M-Series).
  • RAM: 16GB minimum baseline. If it's a Windows laptop, user-upgradeable slots are highly preferred to jump to 32GB later for massive Docker environments.
  • Storage: 512GB or 1TB SSD minimum.
  • OS: Windows 11 or macOS.
  • Background: First-year Mathematics and Computing student with long-term goals of becoming a Deep Learning / AI engineer.

Thank you!

Is MacBook Good For Me?

I am an Engineering Student who wants to Pursue a Career in Ai/ML Side.

I will be working on Training LLMs, Using NLPs , Pytorch and etc.

So will A MacBook Air M5 be able to run these things smoothly?
