YA (2000–2010), real-world setting, rural woods, young woman returns home, grandmother teaches sewing magic, stitches create protective magic across the land, and there’s a dangerous pond she’s warned not to cross (possibly leads to another world). Cozy but eerie tone.
I borrowed this from the young adult section of the local library between 2000 and 2010. The main character is a young woman returning home, or possibly to her grandmother's house. There may have been a sewing circle with multiple women. Their stitching creates actual magical protection across the landscape. The main character is reluctant to learn this stitching magic/doesn't believe in it.
The house is in the woods, possibly in winter, and the main character is warned to stay away from a pond. I think she actually crosses through the pond which acts as a barrier into another world/the same world but dangerous on the other side. She may have gone through to rescue someone but I can't remember. She is eventually saved and makes it back through the pond portal.
