MIPT (Russia, Free) vs. HKUST Guangzhou (China, Full Tuition) for CS/Robotics?
Hi everyone,
I’m facing a major dilemma and would love to get some external perspective from people in academia or the tech industry. I have been accepted to two very different universities for my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (with a potential pivot to Robotics later), and I need to make a decision soon.
My ultimate long-term goal is to pursue a Master’s/PhD in the US or Europe, or move there for work.
Here are my two options:
1. HKUST (Guangzhou)
The Deal: Full tuition scholarship.
Pros: Backed by the massive global brand of HKUST, brand new campus, huge funding, and great labs.
Cons/Doubts: I’ve heard some really concerning rumors and reviews about the Guangzhou campus. Apparently, there are very few international students, and many professors allegedly have poor English proficiency, meaning I could end up socially and academically isolated without knowing Chinese. There are also claims that the academic integrity is questionable (e.g., assignments often being AI-generated) and that locals view HKUST GZ as a bit of a "scam" diploma—essentially a fallback school for rich Chinese kids who couldn't get into top tier mainland universities. I'm worried this reputation will ruin my chances for Western grad schools.
2. MIPT (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology)
The Deal: Government-funded (tuition-free).
Pros: Legendary, extremely rigorous fundamental math and CS foundation. The knowledge you get here is top-tier, and it offers excellent opportunities to get a high-paying tech job within Russia right after graduation.
Cons: Working or staying in Russia long-term is absolutely not what I want. Given the ongoing war and geopolitical climate, I am heavily concerned that an MIPT degree is now a red flag for Western admissions committees and employers, and international mobility from Russia is severely restricted.
(Note: I also got an offer from PolyU in HK, but with no scholarship, so I rejected it).
My Main Questions:
How is HKUST Guangzhou currently perceived by Western grad schools? Is it seen as prestigious as the Clear Water Bay (HK) campus, or is it treated just like any other mainland Chinese university?
Given the current geopolitical climate, is an MIPT degree a "dead end" for someone looking to move to the US/EU right after graduation?
Which option gives me a better foundation and academic leverage for Western grad school admissions?
Would appreciate any advice, especially from international students or people working/studying in the US/EU tech sectors! Thanks!
