Who had surgery primarily to continue their athletic pursuits?

Anyone had surgery as pain limited your ability to perform sport/s but was not disabling otherwise?

I prone paddleboard, which includes knee paddling (a pretty niche sport!) which flares my R anterior hip pain as it involves repetitive deep hip flexion. If I don't paddle, I generally don't have pain (though I've had a couple of flares from prolonged car travel.) If I reduce my volume, it is often manageable. However, my pain limits my ability to train for endurance paddling races, which I really want to do.

It's a big call: get surgery to continue paddling, when a successful outcome isn't guaranteed? Or potentially give up paddling? (I'm also starting to get what I believe are secondary pains- R proximal hammy irritation and R medial knee pain/snapping.)

When you are debilitated by constant pain, surgery, whilst scary, becomes less of a choice.

Just wondering whether others have been in this situation?

44F. Anterior labral tear. Small cam. Consulted with very good high volume hip preservation specialist. Pain has worsened last 3 years. Have done exhaustive rehab with a fabulous hip physio which slightly improved, but didn't resolve my pain.

Still weighing up my options...
